Why Samoa?
Samoa has it all: crystal-clear turquoise water, volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, dramatic coastlines, hidden caves, massive waterfalls, natural swimming holes, and beaches straight off a postcard.
But Samoa isn’t just a beautiful place. It’s rich in culture, rooted in tradition, and full of wonderful people who make the experience unforgettable. And we’re going to experience a lot of it. We’re not spending ten days sitting at one resort staring at the ocean. We’re hiking through rainforest to a volcanic crater lake, kayaking in search of sea turtles, snorkeling above giant clams, biking along the coast, swimming beneath waterfalls, exploring lava tubes, visiting an uninhabited island, experiencing a traditional Fiafia night, and more. Samoa is an adventure waiting to happen! |
Why Travel with Sojourn? The same attention to detail that goes into every Sojourn trip is coming with us to Samoa.
International travel can feel overwhelming, especially somewhere new. That’s why we take care of the planning, logistics, transportation, accommodations, activities, and all the little details so you can focus on enjoying the experience. And Samoa is especially personal to our family. Joel lived in Samoa for two years, where he learned the Samoan language and fell in love with the people, culture, and islands. Our son is half Samoan, and Samoa holds a very special place in our family’s heart. I’ve also traveled to Samoa multiple times and have personally experienced many of the places and activities on this itinerary. We know the islands. We know the roads, the ferries, the places worth stopping, the experiences worth making time for, and the things you simply don’t want to miss. We’ve already done the exploring and figured out the logistics. Now we’re bringing you along. Before the trip, we’ll help you prepare with a packing list, flight guidance, group chat, travel tips, and a pre-trip Zoom call. Once we’re there, we’ll be with you every step of the way—navigating, translating when needed, coordinating transportation, answering questions, taking photos, and keeping everything running smoothly. Whether this is your first international trip or you’re a seasoned traveler, you won’t be on your own. You get yourself to Samoa. We’ll take care of everything else. Come experience Samoa with us and let us show you why this place is so special to our family. |
Trip Itinerary:
This is our tentative itinerary and is subject to change. With international travel, flexibility is key! While we've carefully designed each day to give you an incredible experience, occasional adjustments may be needed due to weather, tides, ferry schedules, travel logistics, or unexpected local events.
Rest assured, any changes will be made with your comfort, safety, and enjoyment in mind.
Day one / Friday, July 9th:
Welcome to Samoa! We’ll pick you up from the airport, get settled in Apia, and then kick off our adventure with a welcome dinner. It’s the perfect chance to meet your fellow travelers and enjoy your first taste of Samoa!
Day Two / Saturday, July 10th:
We'll start our first full day getting to know Apia, exploring the local markets and some of the city's highlights. Then we're trading the city for the jungle.
We'll head into the mountains to hike to Lake Lanoto'o, a volcanic crater lake tucked away in the lush interior of Upolu. This hike is approximately 3.1 miles round trip, with about 320 feet of elevation gain. The trail winds through dense tropical forest before suddenly opening up to reveal the emerald-green crater lake. And yes, you'll have the chance to cool off in the water!
Day Three / Sunday, July 11th:
Optional Sunday Church Experience: Sunday is a special day in Samoa, with church deeply woven into Samoan culture and community. If you’d like to join us for a local service, you’re welcome to come along. It’s completely optional, but the beautiful singing and sense of community make it a memorable glimpse into Samoan life.
After church, we’ll head south. We’ll stop at Papapapaitai Falls, a dramatic 328-foot waterfall, before continuing into O Le Pupu Pue National Park for a short walk to the ancient Ma Tree, known for its massive, wall-like buttress roots.
We’ll finish the day at Togitogiga Falls, where you can swim, relax, take photos, and enjoy some cliff jumping for those who are up for it.
This is optional as well, no pressure!
Day Four / Monday, July 12th:
We’ll paddle through lush mangrove waterways and out into the lagoon in search of sea turtles in their natural habitat. Along the way, we’ll explore hidden waterways and stop at a secluded beach for a swim.
After kayaking, we’ll cool off in a spring-fed freshwater pool and enjoy lunch overlooking village life.
Then we’ll head to the Savaia Giant Clam Sanctuary to snorkel above massive giant clams on the ocean floor, surrounded by Samoa’s vibrant underwater world.
Turtles, hidden waterways, giant clams, and plenty of adventure, all in one day!
Day Five / Tuesday, July 13th:
Today we’re trading four wheels for two!
We’ll bike approximately 8 miles from the Saletoga area toward Lalomanu Beach, following the coastline at a leisurely pace and enjoying the tropical scenery along the way.
Then we’ll head out to Namu’a Island, an uninhabited island paradise just off the coast of Upolu. No resorts, no crowds, just a tiny island surrounded by the South Pacific.
Back on Upolu, we’ll spend the rest of the day at Lalomanu Beach, named by Lonely Planet as one of the Top 10 Beach Destinations in the World. Think white sand, crystal-clear water, swaying palms, and views of the offshore islands.
Prefer a little assistance on the bike ride? E-bike upgrades will be available for an additional cost.
Day Six / Wednesday, July 14th:
We’ll visit the famous To Sua Ocean Trench, one of Samoa’s most iconic natural wonders. Imagine a giant natural swimming hole tucked inside a lush tropical garden, filled with stunning blue-green water and connected to the ocean below.
From there, we’ll dive into Samoan culture with a hands-on experience at Saletoga, including traditional umu cooking, a local cooking demonstration, coconut husking and tree climbing, Samoan weaving, and stories and legends.
Then we’ll finish the day with an unforgettable Fiafia Night, featuring an island-style feast, traditional Samoan dancing, and incredible fire knife performances.
A day of natural wonders, culture, food, and a whole lot of fun.
Day Seven / Thursday, July 15th:
Today we’re island hopping! We’ll catch an early ferry from Upolu to Savai’i, Samoa’s largest island and one of the largest volcanic islands in the South Pacific.
We’ll visit one of my favorite places in Samoa: Afu Aau, a stunning natural swimming hole surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and multiple natural pools.
Then we’ll follow the coast to the Alofaaga Blowholes, where powerful waves send huge bursts of seawater shooting through the volcanic rock.
We’ll finish at Mu Pagoa Waterfall, a rare tidefall where the Lata River pours directly over a lava cliff into the Pacific Ocean. With only about 31 known tidefalls worldwide, it’s a truly unique natural wonder.
Day Eight / Friday, July 16th:
Today we’ll explore the Aopo Lava Tubes, formed by the volcanic activity that shaped Savai’i. We’ll walk through a tropical plantation before heading underground into these fascinating volcanic tunnels, a completely different side of Samoa hidden beneath the vibrant green landscape. Then it’s time to slow things down.
We’ll head back to the resort for some well-earned free time. Swim, relax, explore, read a book, get a massage, take a nap, or do absolutely nothing. You’ve earned it.
Day Nine / Saturday, July 17th:
We’re heading to Papase’ea Sliding Rocks, basically nature’s version of a water park.
Instead of manufactured slides and chlorinated pools, you’ll find smooth volcanic rock formations carved by water over thousands of years, creating natural rock slides and swimming holes surrounded by tropical greenery.
Slide down the rocks, splash around in the pools, or simply hang out and watch everyone else make questionable decisions.
Then we’ll head back toward Apia for some free time before gathering together for our final night.
Our farewell dinner is where we’ll celebrate the adventure we’ve just shared. Ten days. Two islands. Countless adventures. And a whole new group of friends.
Day Ten / Sunday, July 18th:
Sadly, all good things must come to an end. We'll help get everyone to the airport for their flights home, unless you've decided to extend your stay and keep exploring Samoa on your own!
